Madge Figgy, Witch and Wrecker

Queen of the St Levan Wreckers, Madge had a distinct advantage over her competitors; she was a witch who could raise a storm at will!

She put this ‘skill’ to profit when a booty laden Portugese ship happened to sail by one evening. The squall she conjured wrecked the ship upon the cliffs, and those sailors that did not end up on the sea-bed were washed up on the local beaches. Ever scrupulous in her work, Madge and her boys set to searching the bodies for valuables. Among the bodies was a woman bedecked in fine jewels whose corpse bore a magical mark. One of the wreckers recognized the mark, it meant death to anyone foolish enough to steal from the bearer. Madge ignored the warning, buried the woman and stripped her of her valuables.

Sure enough, as night follows day, her greed came back to haunt her. A mysterious, dark stranger soon appeared in the area, a man who hunted down the woman’s grave upon the cliffs. It is said that a light then rose from the grave and led the man to the cottage of Madge Figgy.

Realising she was dealing with powers at least as strong as her own, and perhaps –literally – facing death in the face, she repented and offered up the woman’s jewels. The stranger gave her a reward for her ‘honesty.’
