Terrye Teverson, Lib Dem prospective parliamentary candidate for Truro and Falmouth, can remember when faeces in untreated water were being flushed into the sea at North Cliffs near Camborne in the early 1990s.

While she is pleased to see a dramatic improvement in quality of infrastructure dealing with sewage, and therefore cleaner beaches, she is concerned that it is impoverished members of the Cornish public that have been left to foot the bill.

She said: “Because South West Water was a private company, there was no funding available to pay for the clean up, which is why our rates have gone up.

“People living in Cornwall are the lowest paid but have these huge water bills, because of our extensive coastline.”
