Prelude
In 1549, Cornwall was in open revolt against the will of England to impose the Book of Common Prayer upon its people among other grievances.
A Cornish army, joined by many from Devon, had imprisoned members of the Tudor gentry in Cornwall and marched on, and captured, Plymouth. Soon the Cornish army had surrounded Exeter and issued terms.
Despite early Cornish successes, the larger and better-equipped English army, led by Lord Russell and aided by German and Italian mercenaries began to get the upper hand in several ruthless engagements.
