The Celtic League

What is the Celtic League?

As a Celtic nation, Cornwall has vital, ongoing relationships with the other five Celtic nations - Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and the Isle of Man. One of the most influential inter-Celtic organisations is the Celtic League that campaigns for the social, political and cultural rights of Celtic nations.

Who’s who in the Celtic League?

The secretary of the Cornish Celtic League is Mike Chappell who, with chairman Jack Bolitho, maintains a high profile organisation with a continuously increasing membership.

Where, why, how?

The Celtic League’s Cornish branch holds monthly meetings where current Cornish issues are discussed. It is at the forefront of a committed and focused activism in Cornwall and increasingly it sets the agenda for branches in other countries. Recent campaigns include a sustained programme to achieve a designated Cornish tick-box in the 2011 census which is seen as essential in obtaining accurate statistical data of the Cornish and the successful action to reverse Government attempts to require planning permission to fly the St Piran’s flag. The Celtic League keeps the Council of Europe closely informed of discriminatory practices against the Cornish and annually sends a delegation to the St David’s Day Parade in Cardiff.

Critics have claimed that local people and Cornish cultural groups are seldom consulted when new developments are planned. Often what Cornish culture and heritage means to Cornish people is interpreted somewhat differently by English government agencies like South West Regional Development Agency and English Partnerships who are behind projects like Heartlands (above).
