Page 3 of 16 The Cornish Stannary Parliament What is the Cornish Stannary Parliament?
Cornwall, as a Duchy, has retained its Stannary Parliament that was the governing legislature of Cornwall’s tin-mining community. Today the Stannary has a double function; it is a customary body whose basis in law was granted in perpetuity. The associated legal system cannot be rescinded and is recognised today (although with no legislative authority) and it is also a highly-organised and influential Cornish human rights organisation.![]() Members of the Cornish Stannary Parliament celebrate after a victory at Truro Crown Court. Who’s who in the Cornish Stannary Parliament? Stannators are Cornishmen and Cornishwomen, well informed on constitutional and legal issues, who are strongly motivated and committed to using the law to address economic, legal and social matters affecting the Cornish people. A raised awareness of the CSP and its work continues to generate a marked increase in membership. Monthly Stannary Parliament sessions are held covering a broad, law-based agenda. When, why, how? This is a busy time for the CSP with major constitutional issues being addressed. The CSP is instrumental in defending and promoting the interests of Cornish people, heritage and territory at UK and International level. The Government’s specific exclusion of the Cornish from the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the work to obtain a dedicated Cornish Census 2011 tick box are ongoing issues. Concurrently the CSP has become increasingly concerned at the possible intervention of the Duke of Cornwall in ways that adversely affect the indigenous Cornish people and seeks to address this through the international courts. ![]() A thousand Cornish flags are placed in the grounds of Exeter Cathedral to mark the slaughter of Cornish people by English-hired mercenaries in 1549.
