Page 8 of 16 Fry an Spyrys What is Fry an Spyrys? Fry an Spyrys (Free the Spirit) is an organisation that seeks to empower Cornish Christians by campaigning for the return of full authority to the Church in Cornwall. ![]() Madron Church, one of the few churches that regularly flies the St Piran's Cross. Picture by Ralph Thomas. Who’s who in Fry an Spyrys? Fry an Spyrys was established by the Rev Andy Phillips, Armorel Lyon, Dr Garry Tregidga, Ray Chubb and Harvey Lander. The current secretary is Stephen Treseder and ex-Grand Bard Jori Ansell and Prof Ken McKinnon are both patrons. Where, why, how? The religious history of Cornwall is specific and distinctive and in the last two millennia alone has seen extremely early Celtic Christianity, strong adherence to Catholicism, including during the post-reformation years and a radical Methodism. Cornwall is traditionally known to have been poorly served by the Church of England. Fry an Spyrys is increasingly concerned about the threat of merger between Truro and Exeter dioceses and the sale of Methodist chapels. The group understands that Cornish Christians need to rediscover a local identity. To revitalise the church, Fry an Spyrys believes that the Church of England should disestablish itself, as did the Church of Wales in 1920, to form an independent Cornish Province of the Anglican Communion and that Cornwall’s Methodist District should seek full control over its own affairs, property and financial assets.
