Page 6 of 7 Cornish Wrestling championships This summer, the first time in half a century, Helston Harvest Fair hosted the Cornish wrestling championships. The sport has always played a pivotal role in the Harvest Fair weekend in years gone by, and is regarded as second only to Flora Day in importance. The success of the event pleased organizers, since the sport has been in decline for many years. With hundreds of spectators attending the competitions at Helston’s Sunken Garden, it appears to have been an enthralling time for Cornish wrestlers and onlookers alike. Brian Pascoe, of Sithney Cornish Wrestling Club, remarked that the event was ‘brilliant’. ![]() The victor in the heavyweight competition was Gerry Cawley who narrowly beat Gareth Beale. Paul Sawyer took the middleweight title while David Palmer won the under 10 championship, and Jade Stokes was victorious too, taking the girls’ title. The event was also a financial success, with several stalls and a raffle. It raised £300. |
