Congress a success

The Celtic Congress, held in Cornwall this year, was a resounding success.
More than 130 delegates from the six Celtic countries of Scotland, Brittany, Wales, Ireland, the Isle of Man and Cornwall came together for a five-day conference with the theme being ‘The Contribution of the Celtic Diaspora to the World of Art, Science and Industry’.

Delegates visited local mining sites, whilst a trip to Falmouth’s National Maritime Museum served to highlight the importance of the sea to Cornish industry.

The Rev. Andy Phillips gives a sermon in Gwennap Pit as part of the Celtic Congress. The pit was made famous by the Methodist preacher John Wesley who used the pit to hold services in the 1700s.

Each year at the congress, the delegates from each nation are given an opportunity to put forward a motion on an issue of importance to their country to the rest of the assembly. This year, the issue chosen by the Cornish was that of a ‘Cornish tick box’ on the 2011 census, an appeal that the Office of National Statistics had previously ignored. The International Celtic Congress will hold its 2008 event at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
