Page 4 of 24 Cornish affairs discussed at the European Parliament Past Grand Bard Ann Trevenen Jenkin represented Gorseth Kernow and other Cornish cultural and linguistic organisations at a meeting of the inter-group for traditional minorities, constitutional regions and regional languages in the European Parliament. She gave a presentation on Cornish culture, language and identity. Ann said: “Cultural links in Cornwall are also improving and strengthening owing to a renewal of interest in our own culture. “With this strengthening of culture and language, a sense of Cornish identity is much more perceptible to the wider British world than it used to be, and is much stronger in Cornwall.” Domenico Ronconi from Italy, former head of cultural planning in the Council of Europe said: “Cornwall needs to awaken Europe to its potential, to grasp new ideas and to publicise its identity. The time is now ripe for a conference of all major groups, both in the private and public sector, within Cornwall on Cornwall and Europe.” |
