Cornwall pioneers wave power

Permission has been granted to build a £28 million ‘electric socket’ for wave devices at Hayle.

Four wave generators will produce enough energy for about 7,500 homes. The installations cover some 8 square km of the surface and should be fully operational by 2009.

Andrew George MP has raised worries about the navigational safety of shipping and in particular the fishing industry. In welcoming the project, he said he wanted to ensure that profit generated by the wave hub benefited the Cornish economy.
