Police clamp down on Cornish activists

Six Cornish activists have been arrested and released without charge following dawn raids by Devon and Cornwall Police.

The six people were arrested in connection with threats made by the Cornish National Liberation Army.

Hugh Rowe, a prominent member of the Cornish Stannary Parliament, was arrested at his Camborne home at 7am when 14 armed police officers requested that he leave his house.

After a thorough search of Mr Rowe’s home, the police took Cornish language tapes, three Cornish flags, books by the renowned Cornish author John Angarrack and notes regarding forthcoming legal action by the Cornish Stannary Parliament. All men were held for more than 12 hours.

In another incident Dave Eddy, a farm labourer from Padstow, was arrested on suspicion of being a member of the CNLA. Reporters from the national press hounded Mr Eddy and took a picture of him outside a caravan near where Mr Eddy was working. The press claimed the caravan was his home and the headquarters of the CNLA. As a result of the media accusations and allegations, Mr Eddy lost his job and his partner left him.

Colin Murley, a spokesperson for the CSP, said he was appalled by the police action.

“It’s a terrible thing that the CSP should be associated with this investigation,” he said. “The state is using the police to suppress Cornish identity.”
