Padstow Pilot Gig Rowing Club

Padstow Pilot Gig Rowing Club, which almost folded nine years ago, is celebrating its 20th anniversary on the crest of a wave and with a special ‘birthday present’ from one of its sponsors.

Truro-based Skinners Brewery have given members a fresh new look with a handsome set of t-shirts and made a financial contribution towards the cost of a new boat.

It’s all a far cry from the scene back in the late ’90s, when membership had dwindled to just six active rowers. With closure looming, a public meeting was held to assess the outlook and consider permanently lending the two boats, Dasher and Teazer, to another club.

Membership is now back up to 60 rowers and last year the club’s under 16 crew were undefeated Cornwall champions.
