Memorial to a freedom fighter

Christopher Caudwell

A plaque is to be placed by the Old Cornwall Society on the Atlantic Inn, Porthleven, to commemorate the stay of the poet and writer Christopher Caudwell during the 1930s.

Caudwell was a journalist and Marxist. After organising against Moseley’s Blackshirts in the East End he went on to drive an ambulance to Spain where he became a machine gunner and used his journalistic skills to organise propaganda for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War.

He died on the first day of the battle of the Larama Valley at the age of 30. His most famous book Illusion and Reality concerned culture, psychology and anthropology, and was penned in Porthleven.

Families of persons that fought for the Republican side have recently been offered dual nationality by Spain.
