The Gorseth Kernow is a non-politcal, non-religious council of Bards electing each year new Bards who have done something to maintain, heighten or spread the Cornish culture. Bards are made for achievements in learning Cornish language, for making music or writing plays, for campaigning for Cornwall or for maintaining links with the millions of Cornish overseas. The Bards have no connections to druids or paganism. Other allegiances are irrelevant as long as their main one is to Cornwall. Every three years a new Grand Bard (currently Vanessa Beeman) is elected and each year he or she will preside over the awards at an outdoor ceremony somewhere, anywhere, in Cornwall. Each bard has a bardic name - in Kernewek and English - that they choose themselves. Each is unique. The annual meeting of the Gorsedd draws crowds from around the world and across Cornwall. The ceremony is used as a hub around which to arrange music and entertainment that lasts the entire weekend. |
