Eddi Beech sits back and soaks up the atmosphere at The Cornish Arms
There’s something special about a proper Cornish pub.

Maybe it’s the real ales, the friendly locals or the smell of home-cooked food. The Cornish Arms at Sparnon Gate (near Redruth) is no exception. Its welcoming atmosphere and open fires give it that proper old pub feeling.

The menu here is honest and simple. Typical ‘country pub’ food, with a classic menu and roast dinners served on a Sunday (booking required). There is something for almost everyone to enjoy on the main menu, without the age-old problem of too much choice.

There is no pretence here, this is not a nasty gastro pub; just tasty food at reasonable prices. The fish and chips in particular are very good indeed, and revered by the locals. The pub also offers a take away menu for the less-sociable among us. I had the homemade chicken curry; one of the landlady’s specialities. It was tasty, well presented and filling.

The Cornish Arms was built in the 16th century, originally as a croft built of Cornish granite stone. Throughout its existence it has served many purposes: a coaching inn, a school house, and three tin miners’ cottages, finally becoming a pub over 120 years ago.
