Jessica Tooze enjoys a day exploring Week St Mary

Snugly nestled among the rolling countryside between Bude and Wadebridge lies the beautiful secluded village of Week St Mary.

The village is laid out on a long road with small, well maintained housing estates and the Green Inn pub at one end, connected to the ‘traditional’ site of the village green by a quiet country road.

The village green looks onto the Treetops Inn, the parish church of St Mary and the village shop and post office.

The Rev Robert Dickenson believes that the location of Week St Mary is the reason why the village has been able to maintain its vibrant sense of unity over the years.
Rev Dickenson said: “It has the traditional feel of a close community.

“It’s also a very caring place that passionately guards its own interests – the village is very protective of its identity and its membership.”

He added also that the community embraces newcomers to the village.

This is certainly true of local resident Michele Bacchus, a young mother who moved back to Cornwall with her husband and young son from the Midlands.

She said: “We’ve been here about a year and it's very friendly and welcoming. We moved here because it is nice and safe. Everybody knows everyone else and they look after each other and the youngsters.”

The village boasts two pubs: the Treetops Inn and the Green Inn that form the hub of the community.

Steve Johns, a regular at the Green Inn, said of the village: “It’s a lovely place. I moved out here from Bude when I got married and I’ve never looked back.”
