Cornwall and the Cornish

This is a picture of a house at Lamorna Cove, not far from Land’s End. Cornwall is a tough place to live in. Most pictures you will find show the sea battering the land but here the land itself is falling into the sea. Whether by sea or by land, Cornwall will always take you by surprise. It might entertain you or worry you, but it will always be different. These pages give you a selection of what Cornwall has to offer, seen through my eyes and through the lens of my camera. An Opinion...

Here is the village of Brea in a thunderstorm. Everything seems black and white - but of course that is not the way things really are. Cornwall is an odd place to have been brought up in. Most people in the United Kingdom see it as a holiday destination while the Cornish see it as a country in its own right, only incidentally connected with England. In fact, Cornwall has been part of England since the ninth century but until the sixteenth century most people spoke Cornish - properly Kernewek- a Celtic language very similar to Welsh. The last native Cornish speaker is popularly supposed to have been Dolly Pentreath who died in 1777 and is buried in Paul churchyard, near Newlyn. However, the residents of Zennor, near St. Ives, can point to far more recent Cornish speakers in their churchyard. The sad fact is that, despite a revival, Cornish is more a language of the graveyard than the playground. This does not stop the Cornish from asserting their difference from the English metropolitan culture which has changed so much of their culture. The present government has rightly granted devolved government for Scotland and Wales. I don't believe in full independence for all the British nations because as a United Kingdom we have so much to gain from sharing our experiences. I do believe that many decisions can be taken at the local level and that if devolution is right for Scotland and Wales, it is right for Cornwall as well.
